What it Takes

  1. 1

    Earn your degree.

You’ll need a bachelor’s degree to get your teaching license in North Carolina. Some bachelor’s programs allow you to earn your license alongside your bachelor's degree. If you already have a bachelor's degree, you can attend an alternative licensure or a master's degree program with a licensure option.

  2. 2

    Complete an Educator Prep Program

Decide which grades and subjects you want to teach and then apply to a program that offers your preferred endorsements. Browse our partner programs to find one that fits in your life. You can find programs that are part-time, hybrid online and offline, and alternative programs that cater to working professionals.

  3. 3

    Pass State Licensure Assessments

Find all the information for the kind of assessment you’ll need in your grade and subject area by browsing our assessment guide. Once you’ve passed the assessments, you’re ready to start leading a classroom!

Paths to Teaching

You already work in a school, so you shouldn’t have to stop working to earn your teaching license. There is a path to licensure that works with your job and lifestyle. Consider some of these strategies to keep working (and earning) while you get your teaching license.

TAs to Teachers

tas to teachers
  • The TAs to Teachers program encourages Teaching Assistants to pursue teaching licenses either full-time or part-time through financial assistance and academic leave opportunities.
  • Through the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, each participating school board may grant TAs academic leave to pursue their teaching license. Each school board may also award up to five TAs as much as $4,600 each per year toward the cost of tuition.
